HOW TO: Remotely access a Windows 10 PC from a Chromebook

By | April 7, 2020

In order to connect via Remote Desktop or Remote Desktop Gateway, you will require a Google account, which is free to create if you do not already have an account.

You will need to be signed into Google Chrome on both your Chromebook and Microsoft Windows PC with your Google account.

Local admin rights on your Windows 10 PC will be required to install the Google Remote Desktop software.

Stage 1 ā€“ Windows 10 PC Setup (i.e. computer that you are connecting to).

Open Google Chrome and sign into your Google Account by entering your Google email address and password.

Once signed in, navigate to: https://remotedesktop.google.com

Click on ‘Remote Access’ followed by the download arrow

A popup window, to Chrome web store will open.  Click on the ‘Add to Chrome’ button.

A security popup window will open asking to confirm adding the extension to Chrome.  Click on the ‘Add extension’ button.

Click on ‘Accept & Install’ to continue.

Chrome will prompt to allow the setup file to be downloaded and installed.  Click on the ‘Yes’ to continue.

Note: You may be prompted to enter admin credentials to install the software.

Once setup has installed the extension and software, you will be asked to enter a name for the PC.  This is normally left as default.  Click on the Next button

Enter a security pin into the two boxes and then click ‘Start’ to continue.

Chrome Remote Desktop will then setup the Windows 10 PC to accept remote connections.  Once completed it will show your PC name, and a status of online.

Chrome Remote Desktop is installed as a Windows service, so it will continue to run if Google Chrome is closed, and should restart automatically following a reboot of your Windows 10 PC.

Stage 2 ā€“ Chromebook Setup

Open Google Chrome and sign into your Google Account
(Note: This must be the same account used in the previous step).

Enter your Google email address and password and then navigate to https://remotedesktop.google.com/

Download and install Chrome Remote Desktop, and open the application.

You should see your Windows 10 PC listed.  Double click to connect.

Enter your pin and click the blue arrow to continue.

Click on your username and enter your PC password.
