By | July 30, 2017

Applies To: Excel 2016, Word 2016, Outlook 2016, PowerPoint 2016, OneNote 2016, Access 2016, Office 2016, Visio 2013, Office for business, Office 365 Admin, Office 365 Small Business Admin, Skype for Business, OneDrive for Business, Office 2013.  You will get this error message if you try to install an Office 365 product or a standalone Office 2013 or Office 2016 application (like Access, Visio, Project, Skype for Business, or OneDrive for Business) when you have the 2013 or 2016 versions of Microsoft Office Professional Plus or Microsoft Office Standard already installed on your computer.

Error when trying to install Click-to-Run over MSI install

Click-to-Run is the technology used to install Office 365 subscription and most other Office 2013 and Office 2016 products. Windows Installer technology (MSI) is used to install the volume license editions of Office, like Microsoft Office Professional Plus and Microsoft Office Standard.  Unfortunately, you can’t have Office products of the same version (like 2013 or 2016) that use two different installation technologies installed on the same computer. This also applies to standalone applications like Access, Visio, Project, Skype for Business, or OneDrive for Business.

In some cases, you also can’t have two different versions of Click-to-Run applications on the same computer. For more information, see “Stop, you should wait to install Office 2016” error.
