Christmas lights increase intermittency

We would like to remind our subscribers of an issue which impacts broadband connections at this time of the year.

It has been identified that an extremely small percentage of ADSL connections may be affected by interference from seasonal lighting which has been installed either internally or externally. When the lighting control unit is set to any mode other than a Steady-On state (example: sequential, combination, slow glow, flashing), it may generate high levels of radio frequency noise which can cause the Broadband Service to lose synchronisation.

Investigations have revealed that the occurrence of this issue is more common where the lighting does not meet the necessary CE standards and as such does not have the associated CE markings.

If you are suffering from loss of line synchronisation it may be possible to identify any interference either by disconnecting the seasonal lighting or by tuning an analogue radio to Medium Wave 693 down to 612. A high level buzzing will be evident when in the vicinity of faulty equipment and enable you to resolve the problem without the need for an engineer visit.
